Small Bore Rifle

THE RIFLES

Two calibers of rifle are used at the ranges of the Barbados Rifle & Pistol Federation, Inc.

  • .177 Air Rifle
  • .22 Free or Sport Rifle.

DRESSING THE SERIOUS RIFLE SHOOTER

The basic item needed as soon as the probationer commences training is a shooting glove.

This is required to assist with the stability of the rifle but more importantly to protect the non shooting hand from the pressure of the rifle on top of the knuckles in the Air Rifle and Standing positions or the webbing between thumb and fore finger in the Prone or Kneeling positions.

Next on the list would be the shooting jacket. With this investment one would know for sure that this shooter is serious about rifle shooting. Many would not spend Bds $500.00 plus (basic off the peg) and not continue in the sport unless there were circumstances way beyond their control. The jacket is NOT bullet proof as is the first question asked by the innocent observer. The jacket is used for stability around the waist, chest and shoulders in the standing events and around the shoulders in the Prone and Kneeling positions.

There is also padding at both elbows to provide a small measure of comfort in the Prone position and to a lesser extent the Kneeling position. The jacket also absorbs some of the pulse beat thus allowing the shooter to maintain a reasonably hold on the target.

Continuing to dress the shooter, the boots would be the next item.

Again, not a cheap item. With this purchase, there's no turning back and the shooter is looking to improve his / her art. The purpose of the boot is to provide a measure of stability around the ankles and also allow a firm, flat contact with the floor in the Air Rifle and Standing positions. In the Kneeling event the shooter sits on the heel of the boot while in position.

The next item for the serious rifle shooter would be the shooting trousers.

The main stability is in the waist for the Air Rifle and Standing events and the crotch in the Kneeling event.

The padding and non-slip material at the knees and backside are important in the Kneeling position.

The sling is used in the Prone and Kneeling events and when adjusted correctly holds the weight of the rifle eliminating any tension on the forearm.

All of the above items must conform to specifications as set out in the rules and regulations of the governing body for shooting: International Sport Shooting Federation.
